Survival Skills for Women (SSW), based on
the belief that all women have something to contribute,
is a life management skills program where the underlying
goal is to facilitate the personal and economic self-sufficiency
of ALL women.
We adhere to a three-pronged philosophy:
- ALL women have inherent worth, strength, and competence.
- Growth can occur when old skills and behaviors are
reviewed or new ones learned.
- A safe and supportive learning environment and a positive
social network are important to optimal personal growth,
skill development, and lasting behavioral change.
SSW consists of 10 three-hour workshops,
delivered sequentially and intentionally.
Workshop Topics
- Assertiveness
- Personal Health
- Nutrition
- Money Management
- Child Management
- Self Advocacy
- Legal Rights & Responsibilities
- Coping with Crisis
- Community Resources
- Re-Entry/Employment
Women who have successfully completed the
program have literally changed their lives…completed
their GED…opened their own business…obtained
a college degree…gone to work and gotten off welfare…become
better parents…
Survival Skills for
Youth (SSY) promotes confidence,
competence, positive social interaction, and motivation
to improve success in educational, social, and employment
settings. While SSY targets youth who have a history of
failure in academic and/or employment settings, or is considered
at-risk, the program has proven highly effective for all
adolescents; because all of our kids are at risk in today's
world!
The program is participant-centered
in philosophy and approach. It is peer-driven, gender equitable,
and uses teaming and cooperative learning, based on the
attributes of the resistance model and the resilience theory.
SSY consists of 10 three-hour
workshops, bringing kids together and preparing them to
move on in their life.
Workshop Topics
- Respecting Self and Others

- Communicating with Others

Youth progress from having
an internal focus—what is going on with the individual
and his/her immediate environment, to an external focus—what
is occurring within his/her community.
